Depression

Depression is more than an occasional period of sadness. It can affect mood, interest, energy, sleep, concentration, appetite, and the ability to manage everyday responsibilities. Symptoms that persist or interfere with life deserve professional attention.

Possible symptoms

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or irritability
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness

What to expect during a telemedicine visit

Your provider will ask about your symptoms, how long they have been present, your medical history, medications, substance use, sleep, and safety. Your care plan may include counseling or therapy resources, lifestyle support, medication when appropriate, follow-up, and referral to behavioral-health or other specialty care.

If you are thinking about suicide or harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 for immediate danger. Do not wait for a telemedicine appointment.
