Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder that can cause recurring abdominal pain along with changes in bowel habits. Some people have mostly constipation, some mostly diarrhea, and others experience both.

Common symptoms

  • Abdominal pain or cramping related to bowel movements
  • Bloating or excess gas
  • Constipation, diarrhea, or alternating bowel habits
  • A feeling of incomplete bowel movements

What to expect during a telemedicine visit

Your provider will review your symptoms, diet, medications, stress, family history, and the timing of bowel changes. Treatment is individualized and may include nutrition and fiber guidance, hydration, activity, symptom-targeted medication, and follow-up. Testing or an in-person evaluation may be recommended when symptoms do not fit IBS or need further investigation.

Contact a clinician promptly for blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, persistent vomiting, anemia, symptoms that wake you from sleep, or a new change in bowel habits – especially after age 50. Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain.
