Arthritis describes conditions that cause pain, stiffness, swelling, or reduced movement in one or more joints. Osteoarthritis is common and often affects the knees, hips, hands, or spine. Other types, including rheumatoid arthritis and gout, require different evaluation and treatment.

Your provider will ask about the location and pattern of your symptoms, injuries, medical history, medications, and how your joints affect daily life. Depending on your symptoms, your care plan may include activity and exercise guidance, weight-management support, pain-relief options, laboratory testing or imaging, and referral to an in-person clinician or specialist when needed.
Seek urgent medical care for a suddenly hot, red, very swollen joint with fever, a serious injury, or an inability to bear weight.
